People have joined from different parts of the country....and there are some who don't have a blog who are following along on Facebook!!! I'm excited to see what you all get from this study. Each day I'll do my best to post what I feel God showed me. I'm so looking forward to see what each of us glean from God's Word!!!
So....are you ready?
Let's get started!!!
(p.s.....I'm reading and studying from the New Living Translation)
Chapter 1 - May 1, 2012
We can find the "Purpose of Proverbs" in the very beginning of Chapter 1....
"to teach people wisdom and discipline to help them understand the insights of the wise. Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives to help them do what is right, just, and fair."
Definition of wisdom....practical knowledge that involves ethical choices. Gaining wisdom involves discipline (just like our GRANDsons, I'm not too fond of being disciplined!!!) The advice given in the book of Proverbs encourages me to resist my sinful nature toward wrong behavior (especially, my mouth!!!)
Several of the verses in Chapter 1 deal with staying away from people who will lead us astray....away from living for God.
I read this in my study Bible....
"An intimate relationship with Wisdom means having an intimate relationship with God, the foundation of true knowledge!!!
The entire gist of the book of Proverbs can be summed up in verse #7....
"The fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge"!!!
We have to depend on GOD for EVERYTHING....
....including knowledge and wisdom!!!
Chapter 2 - May 2, 2012
As I read Chapter 2, I thought about my long-time prayer for discernment. Discernment is WISDOM. A few months back, it was said that I think I'm superior. I'm not certain what the lady meant, and the statement hurt me....but it got me to thinking (uh-oh...;-). As I prayed about the situation, and new information was brought to light, I realized that this lady was hurting and "hurting people hurt others"....and I was able to understand a bit more why she said what she did!!!
If I "cry out for insight" (wisdom/discernment), and "ask for understanding" (vs 3)....and "fear" the Lord....here are things I'm told in this chapter He will provide for me if I cling to HIM and stay on the path of righteousness and not let the seductive ways of the world entice me to do wrong.....
* He will be my shield if I walk with integrity
* He will guard my paths
* He will protect me if I'm faithful to Him
* He will fill me with joy
* He will keep me safe
* He will save me from evil people whose words are twisted
(absolutely loved it when I read that verse)
Chapter 3 - May 3, 2012
As I read thru Chapter 3, I imagined God speaking to me....personally. The "bottom line" of what I learned is that God loves me...His daughter....and because of that love He sometimes....okay, in my case, He OFTEN has to discipline me, just like we correct our children and GRANDchildren. And....because we don't want them to grow up to be little heathens we try to teach them right from wrong....God does the same to me so that I will grow more and more in HIS image.
WOW!!
What an awesome thought!!!
In HIS image!!!
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.
Chapter 4 - May 4, 2012
I was reminded so much of the Robert Frost poem, The Road Not Taken as I read Chapter 4. Did y'all notice how often the word "path" was mentioned? This chapter tells us that we have a choice of which path we take....the straight path of the wise, or the way of "evildoers". Verse 15 really caught my attention, "Don't even think about it; don't go that way. Turn away and keep moving". When a bad thought comes to mind, I need to immediately dismiss it....don't keep mulling it over and think about it....because it can lead to an action that I'll probably regret!!!
Proverbs 4:23 & 26
Guard your heart above all else.
Mark out a straight path for your feet;
stay on the safe path.
Chapter 5 - May 5, 2012
Chapter 5 is really very self-explanatory in telling us to not have sex outside the realms of marriage. Verse 15 plainly says "drink from your own well", meaning don't cheat on your spouse. Even though the scripture seems to be directed toward men, the instruction is meant just as much for us gals, too!!! But from the beginning of this chapter, I kept thinking of the "immoral woman" who needs to be avoided.....merely as SIN....not just sexual sin, but ALL SIN!!!
Proverbs 5:1-2
My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
listen carefully to my wise counsel. Then you will show discernment,
and your lips will express what you’ve learned.
By reading, listening....but most importantly OBEYING....God's word (wise counsel), it will not only keep me from sinning....but will make me want to let others know what I've learned....hence....my blog here at Jeremiah 29:11 was born!!!
Thank you, Lord!!!!
Chapter 6 - May 6, 2012
I felt that verses 27 and 28 pretty much summed up Chapter 6 because they're warning us that if we play with fire....we're gonna get burned!!!
Can a man scoop a flame into his lap and not have his clothes catch on fire?
Can he walk on hot coals and not blister his feet?
The warnings that were given in the rest of this chapter had to do with not putting yourself in a bind by securing someone else's debt and if we do, we need to get out of the situation as soon as possible. We're warned to not be lazy....and are told that there are 7 things the Lord hates.....
1) A haughty look (pride)
2) A lying tongue
3) Hands that kill the innocent
4) A heart that plots evil
5) Feet that race to do wrong
6) A false witness who pours out lies
7) A person who sows discord in a family
And, again, warnings are given against sexual immorality.
Chapter 7 - May 7, 2012
Chapter 7 is the last of 4 sections that once again warn against the dangers of the "promiscuous" woman. In the study of "Biblical Mathematics" that was suggested by my precious mentor and friend, Ms. Thelma, the Number Four in scripture represents the world. So....Chapter #7 (#7 represents perfection) is yet another warning for me to stay away from the things of this old sin-filled world that could draw me away from Jesus.
The "immoral woman" in the story came out just as darkness fell. She was full of sweet words and dressed to seduce. Isn't that just the way many fall into a trap? The things that entice us are often things that happen during the night. The "sin" is made to look like something we just have to have....can't do without it....and it doesn't have to be sexual in nature....but it's a trap!!! Once we take that first step, we're often stuck in the sin with seemingly no way out.
WARNING!!!
DON'T TAKE THAT FIRST STEP!!!
(reminds me of when Eve took the first bite of the forbidden fruit)
At first glance, look away!!!
Or, run if you have to!!
(remember, that's what Joseph did to get away from Potiphar's wife!!!)
The minute we're drawn away from the the "straight and narrow" path....we need to start reciting scripture....or as Ms. Becky suggested....start singing....'cause the ole devil doesn't want to hear our CHRISTian songs!!!
Proverbs 7:2-3
Keep my commands and you will live;
guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.Bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
Chapter 8 - May 8, 2012
In reading a commentary on Chapter 8, I found that Chapter 8 and 9 actually go along with each other. In Chapter 8, we talk about Wisdom....and in Chapter 9, we're told what trouble "Folly" can get us into!!!
Both Wisdom and Folly are given the description of a woman who had a house on "the heights overlooking the city". The commentary said that this suggested ancient temples....which meant we have the option of choosing between the true GOD and false gods.
Right there is where that free will comes into play!!!
"Wisdom is associated with TRUTH, understanding and knowledge".
And....since my prayer for such a long time has been for discernment (wisdom)....this was probably my favorite verse we read today....
Proverbs 8:12
"I, Wisdom, live together with good judgment.
I know where to discover knowledge and discernment."
Chapter 9 - May 9, 2012
In Chapter 9, we see the contrast between Wisdom and Folly, both being represented by women. I don't mind being called "Wisdom", but being labeled as "Folly"....not so much!!!
;-)
Both of these women have a lot of similarities....reminding us of how often looks can be deceiving. One of the commentaries I read said it best....
"Wisdom is forthright and honest with everyone"
"Folly hides and does things in secret"
In verses 7 and 8, I was reminded of a situation I was in about a year ago that turned very ugly....simply because I was trying to get a point across to someone who was ridiculing me....and they turned the tables on me....
Proverbs 9:7-8
Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get an insult in return.
Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt. So don’t bother correcting mockers;
they will only hate you.
But correct the wise,
and they will love you.
"don't bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you"
WOW.....great morsels of wisdom!!!
Chapter 10 - May 10, 2012
I think Chapter 10 might be my favorite reading so far!!! It is known as "The Proverbs of Solomon" and is a variety....bits and pieces....of advice about several different topics. It's a contrast between good and evil....or, being wise and being foolish!!! When we read scripture, certain verses will always stand out to us depending on things we've gone thru, or are currently in the middle of. Here are the ones that touched my heart....
Proverbs 10:19
Too much talk leads to sin.
Be sensible and keep your mouth shut!!!
Nothing like being blunt and to the point, right?!?!?
Proverbs 10:25
When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away,
but the godly have a lasting foundation.
This one reminded me of the little children's song about building our house on a ROCK!!!
Proverbs 10:28a
The HOPEs of the godly result in happiness!!!
Chapter 11 - May 11, 2012
Chapter 11 is a continuation of Chapter 10, contrasting the wise person and the foolish one. One thing that stood out to me....because I have a problem with being prideful....was a definition I found in a commentary.....
Pride - Dishonest self promotion
Humility - Honest assessment of one's strengths and weaknesses
Isn't that a harsh definition?
Or....is it just harsh to me because of that word "dishonest"?!?
It's soooooo difficult to admit I have a problem with pride....and the denial itself is nothing but pride!! OUCH....God just now revealed that to me. And, I also just remembered....that sometime in the night, HE prompted me to do a bit of research on pride.
Oh, precious Lord....do I have to?
Cause I know it's not gonna hurt!!!
:'(
Chapter 12 - May 12, 2012
A lie is a lie is a lie in my opinion....no matter how we try to sugar coat it and call it something else!!!
In my quest for "truth"....I'm like Sylvester in the cartoon....I just want them to be caught and exposed....or their pants to catch on fire....literally!!!
;-)
When lies are told....a trap is set....for the liar....
Proverbs 12:13
The wicked are trapped by their own words,
but the godly escape such trouble.
Honesty really is the best policy....
Proverbs 12:17
An honest person tells the truth;
a false witness tells lies.
This one is something that I found out just recently.
I knew that something just wasn't right about a person I had some dealings with....and God allowed information to be exposed that confirmed my "uh-oh" feelings.
Proverbs 12:19
Truthful words stand the test of time,
but lies are soon exposed.
Proverbs 12:22
The Lord detests lying lips,
but HE delights in those who tell the TRUTH!!!
Chapter 13 - May 13, 2012
What I saw as I read Chapter 13 was all kinds of discipline.
Self-discipline
controlling the tongue, laziness, pretending to be something we aren't, pride, thought before action, ignoring sound advice
Discipline of others
correction of our children
Proverbs 13:3
Those who control their tongue will have a long life;
opening your mouth can ruin everything.
Proverbs 13:10
Pride leads to conflict;
those who take advice are wise.
This one reminds me of the saying "birds of a feather flock together"....
Proverbs 13:20
Walk with the wise and become wise;
associate with fools and get in trouble.
Chapter 14 - May 14, 2012
So much of what I've read so far in the Book of Proverbs has been contrasts. Here is a list of contrasts I noticed in Chapter 14.
Lies vs. Truth
Wise vs. Foolish
Denial vs. Confession
Bitterness vs. Joy
Laughter vs. Grief
Wicked vs. Godly
Rich vs. Poor
Evil vs. Good
Work vs. Mere Talk
Peaceful Heart vs. Jealousy
Godliness vs. Sin
Proverbs 14:10
Each heart knows its own bitterness,
and no one else can fully share its joy.
Proverbs 14:13
Laughter can conceal a heavy heart,
but when the laughter ends, the grief remains.
Chapter 15 - May 15, 2012
In Chapter 15, we're given more advice on how to grow in wisdom....
....and one way is to be willing to accept constructive criticism.
Proverbs 15:32
If you reject discipline, you only harm yourself;
but if you listen to correction, you grow in understanding.
This verse was a reminder to me to keep my focus on God....
and not on gossip (trash)!!!
Proverbs 15:14
A wise person is hungry for knowledge,
while the fool feeds on trash!
God knows ALL secrets.....
Proverbs 15:11b
How much more does He know the human heart!
Chapter 16 - May 16, 2012
Each day as I read, I've been keeping a notebook and have managed to fill a page for each Chapter!!! It seems like in Chapter 16, verse after verse said something to my heart....sometimes in a gentle way.....and others that pointed to that word that keeps rearing it's ugly head in my life....
...."pride"!!!
I jotted down about 7 or 8 verses that spoke to me....
.....but for me it all boiled down to this one verse....
Proverbs 16:20
Those who listen to instruction will prosper;
those who trust the Lord will be joyful!
Chapter 17 - May 17, 2012
What I kept thinking as I read Chapter 17 was how it talked a lot about "conflict". Several verses spoke about quarreling with others and forgiveness. In verse 3, we're told that"fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but the Lord tests the heart." We all face a lot of "fires" in our lives with the hardships and difficulties and trials and temptations that we are faced with every day. God is watching to see how we handle those things that come our way!
Proverbs 17:6a
Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged.
Proverbs 17:22
A cheerful heart is good medicine,
but a broken spirit saps a person's strength.
Proverbs 27:a
A truly wise person uses few words!!!
Chapter 18 - May 18, 2012
O, be careful little mouth what you say
O, be careful little mouth what you say
For the Father up above is looking down with love
So be careful little mouth what you say!!!
As I read Chapter 18, I was reminded of the little children's song!!
We have to be very careful with our words....
....because what we say has consequences.....
....sometimes good....and sometimes not so good!!!
Proverbs 18:10
The name of the Lord is a strong fortress;
the godly run to Him and are safe.
Chapter 19 - May 19, 2012
As I began to read Chapter 19, I was reminded just how foolishwe I can be when we I don't pray and ask for God's wisdom before making an important decision.
Proverbs 19:2
Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good;
haste makes mistakes.
A few years ago I was offered a part-time job working from home. I truly thought this was an answer to prayer....but it turned out to be wrong for me and lasted only a few months. I showed way too much enthusiasm and made a hasty decision and it truly was a huge mistake!!! So much of Chapter 19 spoke to me about this one mistake. I had an "uh-oh" feeling about the one who offered the job from the beginning, but couldn't put my finger on exactly what was wrong....until some information surfaced a few months ago.
Proverbs 19:1
It is better to be honest because wealth gained by dishonesty is short-lived and will lead to harm!!!
Isn't it wonderful how this study of Proverbs can be applied to so much in our lives today?!?!
Chapter 20 - May 20, 2012
I'm just going to high-light some of the verses that stood out to me in today's reading....
Wise people recognize their own weaknesses.
Pride prohibits people from seeing their own faults.
Proverbs 20:9
Who can say,
"I have cleansed my heart;
I am pure and free from sin."
Praying for God's discernment to observe and learn from experience.
Proverbs 20:12
Ears to hear and eyes to see -
both are gifts from the Lord!!!
This one totally speaks for itself....
Proverbs 20:19
A gossip goes around telling secrets,
so don't hang around with chatterers.
Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord....
Proverbs 20:22
Don't say, "I will get even for this wrong."
Wait for the Lord to handle the matter.
I cannot do wrong and get by...God has an all seeing eye!!!
Proverbs 20:27
The Lord's light penetrates the human spirit,
exposing every hidden motive.
And, this last one is just for me....and possibly Ms. Becky Jane....
;-)
Proverbs 20:29b
....the gray hair of experience is the splendor of the old!!!
Chapter 21 - May 21, 2012
I've noticed how much of what I've read in Proverbs has to do with the heart....and how God looks on my heart and not what I'm trying to do for him....you know, not "my sacrifices"....but what the intentions of my heart are!!! In Chapter 21, we're taught that we should give to those who are less fortunate than us. I also love how the scriptures can be humorous....although not so much that the humor also convicts my heart!!!
;-)
Proverbs 21:9
It's better to live alone in the corner of an attic than with a quarrelsome wife in a lovely home.
Proverbs 21:19
It's better to live alone in the desert than with a quarrelsome, complaining wife.
OUCH!!!
And, there's nothing like scripture that's just plain ole blunt....no beating around the bush....
Proverbs 21:23
Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut and you will stay out of trouble!!!
Chapter 22 - May 22, 2012
From the beginning of Chapter 22, we are taught how the focus of people shouldn't be money....but their good reputation. It reminds me of how when we die, no matter what material possessions we own (great riches, silver, or gold)....they're going to be left behind. But....we will be remembered by our "good reputation" and hopefully be held in "high esteem".
Proverbs 22:1
Choose a good reputation over great riches;
being held in high esteem is better than silver, or gold.
Verse 3 reminded me of Pappy's unemployment and how we could NEVER be making it right now if we hadn't been "prudent" all these years....
Proverbs 22:3
A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions.
The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.
Once again, humor is used to get a point across. In Chapter 13, we're told how a lazy person will use any excuse not to work....even saying "there's a lion out there"!!!
This is the verse that stood out to me today.....
Proverbs 22:4
True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor and long life.
My commentary had this to say on this verse....
A humble person knows he (she) is not the center of the universe.
Humility is more valuable than wealth!!!
Chapter 23 - May 23, 2012
For future reference, I did this study at the hospital while my Mom was having a stress test for her heart.
Well, right off the bat I went and got convicted 'cause I saw my picture plastered all over "don't overeat"....which is GLUTTONY!!!
OUCH!!!
Then, in verse 13, God shows us His humorous side once again....
Don't fail to discipline your children.
They won't die if you spank them.
I can certainly attest to that statement....and so can Jess!!!
;-)
I loved verse 18b....wonder why?!?!?
Your HOPE will not be disappointed.
And....verse 23 spoke to my heart, too!!!
Get the TRUTH and never sell it!!!
And...speaking of speaking to my heart....love, love, love verse 26....
O my son (daughter),
give me your heart.
May your eyes take delight in following my ways!!!
Chapter 24 - May 24, 2012
Not really sure why....but this was the first of all the chapters I've read so far that I really didn't take a lot of notes on. Verse 10 spoke to me more than I think any of them did....
If you fail under pressure, your strength is too small.
I think after I read that verse, I really couldn't concentrate on any of the rest. The commentary in my NLT Bible said this....
"a wise person has emotional control and strength under pressure"
It reminded me of the verse that talks about us having the faith as small as a grain of mustard seed. I think that failing under pressure shows a lack of faith (strength). Great food for thought in that one verse!!!
Chapter 25 - May 25, 2012
As I read this chapter, I kept taking note after note....and then when I reached the very last verse, I thought to myself how it totally summed up everything I had just written....and every note I had taken about gossip and choosing our friends wisely, friendships betrayed, gluttony, telling lies, putting confidence in an unreliable person, loving our enemies....and GLUTTONY.....
Proverbs 25:28
A person without self-control is like a city with broken down walls!!!
Without self-control, I'm going to let my guard down and allow things into my mind and heart that will affect my thoughts and actions....and have a negative effect on my walk with the Lord!!!!
So....like a post I did one day this week....this chapter can be summed up as....
STAND FIRM!!!
Chapter 26 - May 26, 2012
Chapter 26 was chock-full of things about fools....and laziness....and lies....and gossip!!!
In verses 23-28, we're shown how flattery will get you....
....absolutely nowhere in the end!!!
Proverbs 26:23-26 & 28
Smooth words may hide a wicked heart,
just as a pretty glaze covers a clay pot.
People may cover their hatred with pleasant words,
but they are deceiving you.
They pretend to be kind, but don't believe them.
Their hearts are full of many evils.
While their hatred may be concealed by trickery,
their wrong doing will be exposed in public.
A lying tongue hates its victims,
and flattering words cause ruin.
Chapter 27 - May 27, 2012
Verse 1 is a reminder of how often I make plans....
....and God totally changes them!!!
Proverbs 27:1
Don't brag bout tomorrow, since you don't know what the day will bring.
And....speaking of bragging....in verse 2 we're taught not to "toot our own horn"!!! Reminds me of a lady I talked to once and she went on and on about all her accomplishments and how well she did her job....and then I found out she had spent time in prison for embezzlement of close to $250,000 and was still taking money from others!!!
Be sure your sins will find you out!!!
Here are other things discussed in this chapter.....
anger, jealousy, flattery, true friendship, heartfelt counsel.
And, we're shown more humor....again, at the expense of the wife....
;-)
Proverbs 27:15-16
A quarrelsome wife is as annoying as constant dripping on a rainy day.
Stopping her complaints is like trying to stop the wind, or trying to hold something with greased hands.
And, verse 27 reminded me of an old friend....this was "our" verse.
Be sure to pick friends that will have a good affect on you....and vice versa!!!
Proverbs 27:17
As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.
Chapter 28 - May 28, 2012
(This recap of Proverbs 31 will probably be a blog post on Friday, June 1)
This chapter spoke volumes to my heart....about situations I've been in or things I'm currently going thru. Maybe instead of writing exactly what those things are, I should just ask for your prayers if you're reading this. I liked how verse 11 spoke about discernment....something I've prayed and prayed for....and then when it's given and you start finding out things about others....and about yourself....it can be so revealing and hurtful. There's so much "truth" in "the truth hurts". It's good to know that even though I might not see it....or ever know that God has taken care of the situation....that He most certainly does and has my best interests at heart.
Proverbs 28:10
Those who lead people along an evil path will fall into their own trap,
but the honest will inherit good things.
Proverbs 28:13
People who conceal their sins will not prosper but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.
Chapter 29 - May 29, 2012
As I read Chapter 29, all I kept seeing revealed was some sort of "discipline" in almost every verse. Then....I felt God reveal to me....that obviously the words discipline and disciple are from the same root word. So....I did a bit of research.
discere - Latin meaning "to learn"
definition of "discipline"
training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties, or moral character; self-control; to train or develop by instruction and exercise, especially in self-control
definition of "disciple"
one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another
So....in order to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, we must accept and assist in the spreading of His gospel by learning all we can about Him thru studying His word....and in order to do that we have to be trained and molded....and practice over and over and over again....self-control!!!
Chapter 30 - May 30, 2012
This proverb was written by Agur. I couldn't find a lot of information on him, other than his name means "he who gathers" and that he was a son of Jakeh. In the beginning of the chapter, he tells God how weary and worn out he is (oh, how I can relate to that statement right now). In verse 2 he makes the comment "I am too stupid to be human, and I lack common sense". Can I get a show of hands for those reading this who have felt those same emotions?!?!? Okay, I'll raise mine first!!! He admits in verse 3 that he hasn't mastered human wisdom....and neither have I. :'(
I picture Mr. Agur as a very humble man....because after making the statements about himself in the first few verses, he goes on to describe the mightiness of God in such eloquent words in verses 4-6!!! Then....in his wisdom....in verses 7-9 he prays a simple prayer, asking two things of God. First, he asked for help in never telling a lie....and second, he asked for neither poverty, nor riches. In simple terms, Mr. Agur was asking for just enough to satisfy his needs!!!
WOW....I wish I had just a fraction of his wisdom!!!
Chapter 31 - May 31, 2012
I cannot believe this month is gone already. Oh, how I've enjoyed this study. I sincerely HOPE each of us who "Read a Proverb a Day in the Month of May" has learned something new and exciting each day. Here's my take on the very last Chapter....Number Thirty-One!!!
This proverb was written by Lemuel. Just like Mr. Agur, there's not a lot to be learned about him. His name means "devoted to God". In my Bible commentary it states that he was "an unknown king who records the utterance which his mother taught him."
I did a bit of research on the number "thirty-one". It means "offspring" in my "Biblical Mathematics" book. There are thirty-one virtues of a model woman listed in Proverbs 31:10-31. In verses 28 and 29, it states that "her offspring will arise up and call her blessed".
I absolutely love Proverbs 31....maybe I shouldn't because I will NEVER live up to any of the "standards" set to be a Proverbs 31 woman and wife....but it's such a beautiful testimony that no one can truly find a virtuous and capable woman without God's help. That goes for a virtuous man, too!!!
The part in verse 22 that says she will wear "purple" really spoke to my heart....wonder why, Ms. Becky?!?!?
;-)
And verse 25 means so much to me because of the evil spirit of fear that sometimes takes over me....
"she laughs without fear of the future".
Proverbs begins and ends with "fear of the Lord"!!!
Proverbs 31:30
Charm is deceptive and beauty does not last;
but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.
Proverbs 31 will forever be etched into my heart because the part about a virtuous woman was read by Pastor Ronnie White at my Mamaw's graveside service last year, a little over a year ago. As he read all the qualifications, I could just picture my Mamaw rising up early and cooking and cleaning and sewing....and loving on all of us who called her "blessed"!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you to each of you who joined in.
If you get a chance, please leave me a comment and let me know what this study has meant for you.
The name of the Lord is a strong fortress;
the godly run to Him and are safe.
Chapter 19 - May 19, 2012
As I began to read Chapter 19, I was reminded just how foolish
Proverbs 19:2
Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good;
haste makes mistakes.
Who can say,
"I have cleansed my heart;
Choose a good reputation over great riches;
being held in high esteem is better than silver, or gold.
Charm is deceptive and beauty does not last;
but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.

I use the King James Version. Here's my take...As I read Chapter 1, my thoughts kept going back to Solomon's own personal life and how he was so wise in the beginning.
ReplyDeleteHe talks about how "those who hearken to wisdom shall dwell safely". In this chapter, Solomon also counsels us to avoid the enticement's of evil people. In his own life, we can see the results from following and not following his own counsel
When he hearkened unto wisdom he was great, but when he followed after the enticement's of idol worshipers, he fell and lost everything of eternal value.
These thoughts have also lead me to renew my endeavors to continue on the path of righteousness and to stay away from the dangerous detours, no matter how slight and innocent they may appear.
I'm reading from the NKJV..We are like children, instruction is necessary for us to live as we should according to His word. There are evil people who will try to take us from God's Word. We must know the His Word in order to resist. From wisdom comes strength to stand firm.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right Mary. Thanks!
DeleteChapter 2 - As I read and studied, it became apparent that the Lord wants us to know who HE is. He will give us knowledge about who he is as we progress in understanding. In other words, the more we come to a knowledge of the attributes of God, the more He will reveal HIMSELF and HIS creations to us. Like planting a garden from seed, we plant and nurture the seed as it grows it will bear fruit. The same principal applies to our knowledge and understanding of God. It's a gradual process.
ReplyDeleteDeb, I like to type what I learned before reading what you wrote. Going back and reading your thoughts on Chapter 2, I appreciate you sharing what happened to you and how you came to understand why this woman said what she did. I also think that it can be a little overwhelming or even, as she said, "superior" for people who don't have the same understanding of God to come in contact with those who have diligently sought HIM. Her word is a very descriptive word and I think even though she might have meant it as a hurtful word, it is also a very appropriate word...people can have a 'superior' knowledge of God. Not in a prideful way, but in a sense that a persons diligence has given them MORE knowledge.
Happy Wednesday!
BTW..your header today is BEAUTIFUL..
ReplyDeleteChapter 3...I love this chapter, wisdom and understanding, the true gems of life. My word for the year is "PEACE", this chapter brought me peace. The instruction in this chapter is the road map to a peaceful life. True peace comes from trusting the Lord, from following His commands, loving our neighbor and giving generously to each other. God in His mercy left us His Word that we may know how to live, this one chapter holds a wealth of instruction. Thank You Lord...
ReplyDeleteI am so glad for your comment. Your word for the year is one that should be the word for everyone. Wouldn't it be an awesome world if PEACE was the word for everyone this year!
DeleteYes it would Becky Jane...A world of PEACE, what a wonderful thought !!
DeleteChapter 3 - When the Lord admonishes us to become even as HE is, I take that literally. vs. 19 says - "The Lord by WISDOM hath founded the earth; by UNDERSTANDING hath he established the heavens." Just prior to this verse, he told us in vs. 13 - "Happy is the man that findeth WISDOM, and the man that getteth UNDERSTANDING." I know that our deepest happiness will come from becoming as HE is and doing what HE does. I know that we all have the opportunity to do this even through the eternities. Some may think I'm way of base here, but when a person comes to the understanding that God is a glorified being and he looks like us - or better yet, we look like Him. We are created in his image...literally. He is not an indescribable image, but he has a glorified body and spirit which we look like. He is our Father and the offspring of the father will look like him, can become like him, and do what he does.
ReplyDeleteI pray all of you will take some time to ponder this concept. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask the Lord about it. Deb has a reply button at the end of each one of our comments. Please use it if you want to create a thread of discussion.
Deb, being disciplined is hard. The word disciple and discipline have the same root word...kind cool isn't it! You are such an example of discipleship. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteChapter 4...Deb, you and I are sharing the same thoughts this morning. The points you made are exactly what touched me during this reading..I would like to share from Matthew Henry's Commentary on Proverbs 4...He says...Get the rule over thy corruptions; take more pains to get this than the wealth of the world..He also says..There is in the word of God a proper remedy for all diseases of the soul...AND...he also says..The way of the wicked is dark, therefore dangerous; they fall into sin, BUT KNOW NOT HOW TO AVOID IT. Wow, that is so true..So far, Proverbs is giving us instruction of how to AVOID SIN...Thank You Lord for providing us with Your Word...
ReplyDeleteChapter 4 - "With all thy getting, get understanding." I've seen many learned people who lack understanding. Especially understanding the Lord. This scripture reminds of Paul's writing when he said, "Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." (2 Timothy 3:7 KJV)
ReplyDeleteDeb and Mary, Your thoughts reminded me of what Elder Boyd K Packer once said...he likened our minds to a stage. We are in control of the stage, but once in awhile Satan pops in unannounced, and we wonder where did that come from. It's up to us to get him off the stage ASAP. Then he suggested that we have a favorite hymn that we begin to sing or hum. This will get Satan off the stage and back where he belongs,. Because, Satan cannot dwell where there is righteousness.
Becky Jane, I do have song..oh WoW...If I feel myself stumble or if I feel under attack I start singing...Praise God from whom all blessings flow...it wards off the darkness...{{hugs}}
DeleteMary, that is such a beautiful and inspiring song.
DeleteChapter 5 - CL and I have been married for 34 years. He is mine and I am his for eternity. Nothing can be better than this.
ReplyDeleteDeb, there is so much evil that is so easily accessible. Thanks for your comment.
Chapter 5. Satan is so cunning, he can candy coat anything, especially sexual misconduct. All strength to resist comes straight from God's word...Dean and I will celebrate 50 years together in December. I am so thankful to God for bringing us together all those years ago...
ReplyDeleteMary, that is so awesome that you'll be celebrating 50 years in December. Very few marriages make it that long. What a great example you and your husband are.
DeleteChapter 6 - In verse 23, he says, "For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light..." then he proceeds to discuss the follies of immorality. Our society is loosing it's ability to distinguish right from wrong. Morality has become a 'matter of preference'. The light of obeying this commandment has been darkened and thus our society is failing.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite latter-day Apostles to study from is Elder Neal A Maxwell, he said,
"In Proverbs, we read, “For the commandment is a lamp” ( Prov. 6:23). Once darkened, a society loses its capacity to distinguish between right and wrong and the will to declare that some things are wrong per se. Without the lamp, our world finds itself desperately building temporary defenses, drawing new lines, forever falling back, unwilling to confront. A society which permits anything will eventually lose everything!
Therefore, recognized or not, the public has an enormous stake in private morality!"
(LDS General Conference 1995 April Sunday Morning ).
His word sunk deep. I know I can't change the whole worlds views on morality, but I CAN teach my family and those I associate with. I CAN be an example of a virtuous and morally clean woman. I CAN turn off the tv and radio when offensive material comes on. I CAN in my own little way be a candle shining forth this vital principal of moral cleanliness.
Happy Sunday Deb and Mary.
Becky Jane, I feel the root of our being is what we learn at home. Peer pressure is so hard on the young ones, they must get their strength from the Lord and a good home, a sturdy foundation for sure. Hope you have has a wonderful Sonday !
DeleteChapter 6...from this chapter we learn how to conduct good business, we are told 7 things the Lord hates, SOOOO, we must try hard to stay clear of them. Verses 20-23 really touched me..here we are being told to make the word of God familiar to us. If His word is in our mind and in our heart we certainly have a head start on victory over the evil one.
ReplyDeleteChapter 7...Once again we are told the importance of keeping God's word as a treasure. His Word is our armor, as satan always covers sin with fine linens and perfumes of this world. When we are in God's Word and filled with wisdom and understanding we recognize those fine linens and perfumes to be filled with the way to hell. Satan in the great seducer, just like the prostitute, anxious to lure you into his bed of fine linens.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Satan is so subtle. Thankfully we are all given a way out of his clutches.
DeleteDeb, I was getting pretty fed up with this 'worldly woman'. As you can tell by my comment, I couldn't think of anything to say. I appreciate your comment and Mary's. This little discussion group is a fun way to study..
DeleteChapter 7 - Another chapter telling us the evils of immorality.
ReplyDeleteChapter 8...I love your points Deb and the scripture that touched your heart. Once again I referred to Matthew Henry...He points out..attention to the words of Christ, will guide the most ignorant into saving knowledge of the truth. Where there is an understanding heart, and willingness to receive the truth in love, wisdom is valued above gold and silver...I know I am so ignorant so much of the time. Everyday I am so thankful to have God's Word, to me it is more valuable than silver or gold. As the music is now saying, HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD..excuse me ladies, I must worship with this beautiful song...{{hugs}}
ReplyDeleteMs. Mary, I noticed you used the word "truth" several times....my "word for 2012"!!!
DeleteName above all names..How great is our God..My heart is singing...Amen !!
ReplyDeleteChapter 8 - It was cool to see how this scripture first of all tells us that wisdom is better than all the riches the world has to offer; then it leads us down the path(or better yet, UP the path) to an understanding that wisdom is an attribute of God. He possessed it when creating the world and we as his spirit children possessed wisdom in the per-existance. The very fact that we are here and have a physical body shows that we had the wisdom to see how foolish Satan's plan was and that we chose to follow the Fathers plan.
ReplyDeleteAnother truth that caught my attention is in vs 17...they that seek me early shall find me. This reinforced to me how important personal prayer and family prayer are when done first thing in the morning. Like a prophet once said, "I'd rather send my children out into the cold without a jacket than to send them out of my house without having family prayer."
I totally agree, Ms. Becky...if I don't get my scripture reading and devotional done early in the day, things just don't go well!!
DeleteI keep forgetting to add my thoughts on what you said before hitting the send button...silly me! When you mentioned the ancient temples as the reference for wisdom being in 'the heights overlooking the city', I began to think about our modern temples. Right now we have 137 operating · 14 under construction · 15 announced modern temples where we can learn even greater wisdom, understanding, and draw closer to the Lord.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.lds.org/church/temples?lang=eng
Our Pastor spoke a few weeks ago for a couple of SONday nights about the Mormon beliefs...yes, from a Baptist pulpit!!! Again...we're all in this together. I'm a firm believer that when I get to heaven, there's not going to be designated spots for Presbyterians, Mormons, Baptists, Methodists, etc....we'll be one huge group praising and worshiping HIM!!!
DeleteDeb, you are so right, when the true followers of Christ stand before him, we won't be separated into categories, but we'll all be known as his sons and daughters.
DeleteThat's nice that your minister was talking about the Mormons and what we believe. I feel it's also good to go directly to the source when I want to learn about something. That way I know I'm getting the whole picture. HUGS
Chapter 9...First I want each of you (Becky & Deb) to know how much I enjoy and learn from your insights on Proverbs. Each of you have touched my heart.. NOW, on to chapter 9...
ReplyDeleteI think Soloman is telling us we are each responsible for our gain or loss of wisdom. Every thing depends on whether we are willing to follow God's commands. I loved verse 10, what is 'Fear of the Lord?' It is reverance of God, amen...Hebrews 12:28-29 is a great description for this. Have a wonderful day ladies...{{hugs}}
I agree with you Mary! Happy Thursday!
DeleteOh I just love the book of Proverbs. What a wonderful way to share insights with one another. Makes me want to jump aboard.
ReplyDeleteWanda, I hope you will join us! It would be good to hear from you.
Delete(Missed yesterday because CL surprised me for my birthday by taking the day off, so I'm commenting on Chapter 9 and 10 today.)
ReplyDeleteChapter 9 and 10 - 9:8-9...rebuke a wise man and he will love thee. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser...This grabbed me today as one of my worst weaknesses. I don't like being corrected, especially if I 'think' I'm right. This is something I need to work on, because I sure want to be wiser. Both chapters talked about this several times, so I know it's important.
Deb, The 3 verses you highlighted are so good. vs 19 made me chuckle, cause I tend to talk too much sometimes. CL and I are Primary teachers for the 10 year olds in our Ward (Congregation) so we get to sing the house upon the rocks song often. Such a fun song with a profound message.
I don't know why but my computer will not let me "reply." SO...Wanda, would love for you to just jump in with us..
ReplyDeleteBecky...Happy, Happy Birthday!!
Chapter 10..
I love the way Solomon uses 2 sentences in most of these verses, one sentence for what's right and one sentence for what' wrong, good and evil, blessings and curses.
I already had this scripture hi-lited in my Bible..
verse 22
The blessing of the Lord makes one rich.
And He adds no sorrow to it.
Thanks for the Birthday wish Mary.
DeleteChapter 11 - This chapter gave us REAL evidence that wickedness never was happiness. In contrast, when we look at the world we live in, it 'appears' to be just the opposite. This is especially seen in the media...the wicked are shown as being happy and having it all. As vs 1 said, it is a false balance, (a deceptive scale).
ReplyDeleteDeb, what you showed us about pride and humility really struck me. Especially humility being an honest assessment of our strengths and weaknesses. Often I think of humility as denying our strengths so as not to appear boastful, but I've got to learn to be glad in my strengths and accomplishments because it is a sign of the Lords handiwork in me. Thanks.
Chapter 11...Solomon continues with more instructions for a Godly life. Verse 11 really spoke out to me, I guess because of all the hype in the news these days.
ReplyDeleteBy the blessing of the upright the city is exalted. (I think we could apply nation along with city) But it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked. (Oh Dear, sometimes I think that's happening to our country. 'sigh' )
One of my commentaries says..When good people have influence in a city (nation), the citizens live in peace and happiness. But each city (nation) also has its troublemakers, who are a nuisance and create unrest in the community (nation).
My take on that..Onward Christian Soldiers...we, as Christians must continue to stand in the gap. We must continue to pray, pray, pray.
Hope each of you have a wonderful and blessed week-end.
Onward Christian soldiers is so appropriate for our day...we are certainly fighting a battle, thank goodness we know we're on the winning side! Happy weekend to you too, and a very good Sunday!
DeleteChapter 12...I thought this was a good study on ethics and responsibility. There is a right way, God's way and there is a wrong way, Satan's way. God's way leads to blessings and life, Satan's way leads to unrest and death.
ReplyDeleteI loved verse 22..But those who deal truthfully are His delight.
Oh how I want to be His delight, what a perfect place to be.
{{hugs}} y'all...that's what we say in Texas. lololo..Have a great Sonday and Happy Mother's Day.
Yesterday really got away from me, so today I'm playing 'catch-up.'
ReplyDeleteChapter 13 & 14
Proverbs continues to be a Book of Teaching. Solomon has covered so much in intructing us how to live a Godly life. Some of the scriptures really convict me..Chapter 13 verse 3..but he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction, sometimes I do talk too much and not always wisely. In Chapter 14 verse 29...he who is impulsive exalts folly...I do tend to be impulsive. So often I am already into my own thing before I even stop to pray. I have been known to be a 'control freak.' ooooo...confessing that hurt..I just thank God for sending His Word, so we can be instructed and reminded what we need to do. I pray His forgiveness and I pray for His guidance. Let me be still and hear His voice.
Chapter 15 - “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.” ( Prov. 15:4.) As I was studying this verse, a talk by Elder Dallin H Oaks brought new insight. He said,
ReplyDelete"Profanity also takes its toll on the one who uses it. As we read in Proverbs, 'A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.' ( Prov. 15:4.) The Spirit of the Lord, the Holy Ghost, testifies of God the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. (See 2 Ne. 31:18.) When those names are dishonored, that Spirit, which “doth not dwell in unholy temples” ( Hel. 4:24), is offended and withdraws. For this reason, those who profane the name of God inevitably relinquish the companionship of his Spirit."
Several months ago, I posted on my blog the affects profanity can have on us. This is one thing I didn't really touch on but wish I had. The Spirit will not stay with someone who uses the names of the Godhead in offensive ways.
Sorry I've been absent lately, illness, family, downed internet, and house have kept me away from the computer.
Chapter 15..We are taught that words are very powerful, they can cheer others or hurt them, help or hinder. We should always think about what we say, we must be careful of what comes from our mouth. We are also told that inner joy lets us be outwardly cheery even in the midst of our own sorrow/trouble. Joy come from fear (awe/respect/love) of God and His Word. I loved verse 16..Better is a little fear of the Lord, Than great treasure with trouble.
ReplyDeleteLike my friend says, "You can either say - your face would stop a clock, OR you could say - when I look at you, all time stands still."
DeleteThank you
ReplyDeleteProverbs are words to encourage, instruct, and live by. Have been so blessed by this.
ReplyDeleteChapter 16...Deb, your scripture jumped out to me also..I had already hi-lited verse 3, that tells me that I have needed that instruction before. ~Commit your works to the Lord and your thoughts will be established.~ I know that my burdens and cares will be taken care of if I'll just leave them with God. Verse 17 also touched me. ~The highway of the upright is to depart from evil; He who keeps his way preserves his soul.~ How many times did I tell my children, you're known by who you hang out with...We must keep every appearance of evil from us. Happiness will come if we walk with Christ.
ReplyDeleteLately I've been thinking about how old my gray hair makes me look, after reading verse 31 I felt better: "The hoary head (meaning gray hair of old age) is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness."
ReplyDeleteChapter 17 - Deb, the last few verses reminded me of a quote Katharine Hepburn made in the movie from 'Rooster Cogburn'...
ReplyDelete"A wise old owl lived in an oak
The more he saw the less he spoke
The less he spoke the more he heard.
Now wasn't that a wise old bird?"
I think you posted it somewhere on your blog at one time....thus the name of your other blog, right?
Chapter 17..Verse 24 really spoke to me. Instead of thinking about all the things that could happen someday, I need to pay attention to what God’s has for me today.
ReplyDeleteWisdom is in the sight of him who has understanding, But the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.
Lord, I don't want to be foolish.
Chapter 18 - A man's got to have a good wife...I pray I can be a good wife.
ReplyDeleteI loved this from Matthew Henry..
ReplyDeleteThe Divine power, made known in and through our Lord Jesus Christ, forms a strong tower for the believer, who relies on the Lord. How deceitful the defence of the rich man, who has his portion and treasure in this world! It is a strong city and a high wall only in his own conceit; for it will fail when most in need. They will be exposed to the just wrath of that Judge whom they despised as a Saviour. (Pr 18:10-12)
* * * *
I also learned that it is more important to be strong in spirit and mind than it is to be stong in body..
* * * *
The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
The righteous run to it and are safe.
Proverbs 18:10
He is my tower and my refuge. Thank You Lord.
Good Morning Deb. Hope all is okay with you this morning. Covered your Mom in my prayers today. May God be with you.
ReplyDeleteChapter 19...
2 verses really spoke to me, vs 20 and 27. Both these verses are encouraging us to listen to instruction, listen to advice, receive it into our being. Why?...because...it gives us wisdom in our old age, and Lord knows we need it, and it gives us wisdom to bear fruit in our lives!! Stay in God's Word. My personal experience, if I don't study God's Word for one day I can feel Satan's attack coming at me. His Word is my strength to overcome Satan's deceit. As Joyce Meyer says...STAY IN THE WORD!
* * * *
Verse 11 also has an awesome message..
The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger,
And his glory is to overlook a transgression.
WoW...how many of us find it easy to overlook something hurtful that has been purposely done to us. We 'stew' over it, let it simmer in us until our 'pot' runs over. Oh, we might get to forgiveness eventually but we're usually very 'crispy' by then !!
Lord, let me always overlook any transgression someone might do to me...Let me serve you in kindness and forgiveness. Amen.
I always appreciate your analogies, Ms. Mary. I especially liked your take on verse 11....I totally agree with you and Ms. Joyce...I have to "stay in the Word", or I let the world get me sidetracked!!! Thank you so much for your prayers for my Mom!!
DeleteChapter 20...
ReplyDeleteWell, one thing for sure., chapter 20 sure lets us know that God hates a cheater!! In this chapter we are warned to be honest in our business dealings. Vs 10...Diverse weights and diverse measures, they are both alike, an abomination to the Lord.
Vs27..really touched my heart. ~ The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart. ~ Our conscious is God’s lamp within us, letting us know if our disposition and motives are His will for our life. The lamp within us is the Holy Spirit telling us which way to go…..shhhhh…..listen….do you hear Him?
Vs28..tells us that mercy and truth are the glories of God’s Throne…beautiful ;)
Dear Lord, Your Word feeds my soul, Thank You…
Ms. Mary....if you read my re-cap for Chapter 19, you know that it reminded me of a situation I went thru...well, this one was a continuation of like you worded...a "cheater". I love your analogies. Can you believe we only have 11 days to go? This month is flying by!!!
ReplyDeleteDeb, it really saddens me to say how many cheaters I came to know during my years in banking. :(
ReplyDeleteChapter21....
God's Word continues to encourage us to always be honest, be truthful, be generous and be forgiving. Our good deeds and our testimony should always be from our heart, for God know our heart and our spirit. Our Lord does not like "FAKE."
Deb, once again we share the same verse, you know, 23, the one that is speaking to us loud and clear.
For me, I have always let my mouth work toooooo much...the sad thing is, I'm tooooo opinionated. I am such a work in progress, God certainly isn't through with me yet !!! Thank You Lord.
One thing is sure...
It is useless to fight against God, and just as useless to fight without Him.
{{Hugs}} and Blessings
ps...Joyce Meyer has a book titled, "Me and My Big Mouth," it's been in my bucket list of things to read for some time now. I think this study has motivated me to get busy and start reading. haha
Chapter 22..
ReplyDeleteThis is from my study Bible, I thought it very interesting.
Proverbs 22:7-24:34 include the wisdom of wise people, but is not credited to Solomon. Thirty of the sayings are similar to wise sayings found in the Egyptian Wisdom of Amenemope. Most of the sayings in this section are of the instruction type.
Wisdom of Amenemope is a literary work composed in Ancient Egypt, most likely during the Ramesside Period. (1300-1075 BC)
I was really interested in vs 28.
Do not remove the ancient landmark which your father has set.
What is an ancient landmark? Here's what I found.
An ancient landmark is a boundary stone. In ancient Israel, boundary stones were sacred because all property was a gift from the Lord.
We are not to trespass on another man's rights/property.
Good Study today !!!
Chapter 24 - It still astonishes me when is see the Lord leading me by the hand to the things I should study; and how HE confirms so many of his teaching by 2 or 3 witnesses. (See D&C 6:28 "And now, behold, I give unto you, and also unto my servant Joseph, the keys of this gift, which shall bring to light this ministry; and in the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.")
ReplyDeleteWITNESS #1: this morning I was reading the King Follett Discourse by Joseph Smith and read about how vital KNOWLEDGE is to our salvation. "Knowledge saves a man; and in the world of spirits no man can be exalted but by knowledge. So long as a man will not give heed to the commandments, he must abide without salvation. If a man has knowledge, he can be saved..."
WITNESS #2: I read Proverbs 24:4 & 14:
4 And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.
14 So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy EXPECTATION shall not be cut off.
In the story 'Great Expectations', Pip has great expectations given to him in the form of money and worldly knowledge. I pray that my expectations will be in the form of spiritual knowledge and understanding...this is the Greatest Expectation of all.
Becky Jane, Love your prayer !! Spiritual knowledge and understanding are surely the greatest Expectation of all. I'm going to write your last paragraph in my personal journal.
Delete{{hugs}}
Oh Mary, can you see me blushing? Thank you!
DeleteChapater 23...Don't ya just love God's Word..??
ReplyDeleteDeb, we are once again on the same 'wave' with our verses. I love vs 18..For surely (SURELY) there is a hereafter,...Amen, Thank You Jesus !! And vs26, My son (daughter) give me your heart and let your eyes observe my ways..AWESOME...Lord, I do give you my heart and let me ALWAYS OBSERVE YOUR WAYS.
Chapter 24.…
ReplyDeleteRight away vs. 10 spoke to me. God is so awesome, I soooo needed to read this on this very day. We have had some adversity over the past few days. But, praise God, I didn’t faint, tho I thought I might..My strength is small, but I have His strength and there’s nothing small in that!!
Vs14 is referring again to wisdom and knowledge. If we have wisdom and knowledge our hope will not be lost. That tells me how wonderful our HOPE in Christ really is, He has told us in previous chapters how much more valuable wisdom and knowledge are compared to precious gems.
Vs17 & 18...again we are reminded when bad people prosper we should not envy them. God in His time will punish the bad and reward the good.
Chapter 25..
ReplyDeleteI love the comments from my study Bible on verses 21 & 22...
These scriptures show the importance of being kind to one's enemy, or turning the other cheek. In an ancient Egyptian ritual, a person who has done wrong was to carry a bowl of hot coals on his head to show that he was sorry for what he had done. Perhaps this saying means that kindness would cause a guilty person to be sorry for the hurt he or she may have done.
"Burning coals" are mentioned again in Romans 12:20..
On the contrary; if your enemy is hungry, feed him;
If he is thirsty, give him something to drink,
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.
Sending out wishes for all to have safe and fun holiday week-end!
Chapter 26...
ReplyDeleteThis chapter talks a lot about fools and warns us to stay away from them. I like verses20-22, here we are warned…smooth talkers may have pleasant words that only hide their evil intentions! The fools and the smooth talkers will eventually ruin themselves.
Chapter 27
ReplyDeleteFriendship…great instruction given in this chapter on friends ~ I love verse 9...
And the sweetness of a man’s friend gives delight by hearty counsel.
True friends will show the inner love they have for each othe by being open and honest with each other. Faithfulness to one another brings its rewards.
Just four chapters left. Time has flown, seems like we just started.
{{hugs}}
Deb and Mary, I have deeply missed being able to join you as often as I wanted to. It is such a strength to read your words and ponder the teachings of Proverbs.
ReplyDeleteDeb, as I was reading your comments on Chapter 24, my thoughts turned to the Mormon pioneers that were driven out of Illinois and came to Utah to obtain the religious freedom promised by the Constitution of the United States.
They made the ultimate sacrifices, that of home, friends, sometimes even family and life itself. I remember reading what one man had written about his sacrifice. He had crossed the plains during the late fall and his group was caught in early snows and suffered the most horrific conditions. His story is miraculous. When told he was a fool to have left so late in the fall, he said, that the price he paid to know God was worth every sacrifice and deprivation he had suffered.
I love how every person can come to know God and Jesus Christ. It will take sacrifice and dedication, but when a person knows that the life he is living is pleasing to God, then ALL things are possible and no test or trial is to great a sacrifice. The mansions prepared for us through eternity will more than compensate. The Lord is truly good!
Chapter 28 - During my study this morning I came across a talk by James E Faust. Concerning verse 20 it said:
ReplyDelete"We must be careful of the misuse of credit. The use of credit cards in many places has increased consumer debt to staggering proportions. I am reminded of the story of “an elderly farmer [who] wrote to a mail order house as follows: ‘Please send me one of the gasoline engines you show on page 787, and if it’s any good, I’ll send you a check.’
“In time he received the following reply: ‘Please send check. If it’s any good, we’ll send the engine.’”9 [Jacob M. Braude, Braude’s Treasury of Wit and Humor (1964), 45.]
Contemporary society rushes headlong to accumulate the material goods of this world. This leads many to think they can alter the law of the harvest, reaping rewards without paying the price of honest toil and effort. Wishing to prosper immediately, they speculate in high-risk financial schemes that promote instant wealth. This all too frequently results in economic reverses, sometimes even financial ruin. In Proverbs we read, “A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent.” [ Prov. 28:20.]"
The verse just prior to this one talks about tilling the ground and having plenty to eat. Gardening and growing as much of our own food as we can and also preserving our harvest will help us have sufficient for our needs and maybe even some to share. This is a better way to live than the get rich quick schemes. Reminds me of the Tortoise and the Hare fable by Aesop.
Deb, The verses you sited were so good, and I agree that if we're going to pray for discernment, we better be ready...hugs dear sister. It's like I was told once...'you better be careful about what you pray for, cause you just might get it.' I remember when CL and I were young parents and I prayed fervently for more patience...and what did I get? More kids! What a great and hard way to learn more patience! LOL
Happy Memorial Day Sweeties!
Really enjoyed the points made about 'credit'...it is so easy to let credit cards rule your life. As a young married couple many years ago the credit card fever hit us toooo hard. Finally, we just set down one day and cut everyone of them up. God knew His people would be weak and He was sure that instruction was put in His Word.
DeleteI so very much appreciate both of you for joining in this study and commenting. It's great to get different perspectives on each Chapter...and sometimes for the same verses to stand out to us! Thanks, Ms. Becky for your encouragement on discernment. It can really hurt....I've learned things about myself and others this past year that I would really rather not have known (especially about others)...but God has shown me that I trust way too easily....give in too often...and don't stand my ground nearly enough!!! Love you both!!!
DeleteDiscernment...something I certainly pray for... a lot!! I agree Deb, sometimes it brings conviction and conviction hurts. Sometimes it reveals knowledge we want to ignore. It's at these times that we must remember..all things work for good...in our aggitation it's hard to do that, but do it we must.
ReplyDeleteMy verse for this chapter is verse 13.
If you hide your sins, you will not succeed,
if you confess and reject them, you will receive mercy.
Confession of sin results in God's mercy and forgiveness.
I am so thankful that He provides forgiveness. So many times I've done something and then asked myself, "Why did you do that?" or "What got into me?" The answer is easy, Satan roams back and forth on this earth just looking for someone to devour. We are not immune to his arrows, but by God's grace we are protected and by His mercy we can approach the Throne for His forgiveness.
I've had a wonderful Memorial Day hope y'all did too.
When the scriptures say we should be continually repenting I think they're talking right to me. I appreciate your comments Mary. Sometimes Satan pops in out of nowhere...especially grateful that I'm in control and have power over him and that I can send him packin'!
DeleteWe had a good holiday too!
Chapter 29 - With respect to verse 2:
ReplyDeletePresident Ezra Taft Benson said: "Nevertheless, when the wicked rule the people mourn (D&C 98:6-9).
Those of us who had the Opportunity of traveling in war-torn Europe at the end of the last war saw ample evidence of what befalls people when the wicked are permitted to rise to positions of leadership, ". . . when the wicked rule the people mourn" (Prov. 29:2; D&C 98:9). Saith the Lord,
Wherefore, honest men and wise men should be sought for diligently, and good men and wise men ye should observe to uphold; otherwise whatsoever is less than these cometh of evil (D&C 98:10)."
Elder Dallin H Oaks said: "A few weeks ago some of my Brethren and I visited a country that had been ruled for decades by an oppressive dictatorship, recently overthrown. We saw the conditions produced by rulers who had gratified their lusts at the expense of their people. Their palaces stood in shameful contrast to the workers’ apartment houses built without indoor plumbing. Everywhere we saw the ugly effects of the neglect of public services. Truly, the Proverbs say, “When the wicked … rule, the people mourn.” ( Prov. 29:2.)"
Since this is an election year, we have the opportunity to vote for the man we think would best serve our country in righteousness. This takes a lot of prayer on our part to know who would be best. I also feel it's vital that we pray for the leaders of our country and all nations that they will seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the decisions they make. It sounds futile, I know, but miracles have been wrought through the prayers of the righteous.
Deb, I enjoyed your comments this morning. You're right, Disciple and discipline go hand in hand. Prayer and studying the scriptures prepare us to receive revelation. Especially revelation concerning our own lives. Thank you for your insights.
Becky Jane, I also feel it is so important to pray for our leaders, ALL of them. The coming election is going to be critical for our country, I just pray God gives me wisdom when I step into the voting booth. That His will be done in my life and in our country.
DeleteI have certainly enjoyed your comments during this study!
Chapter 29
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me that this chapter is a recap of all the previous chapters. God’s standards are crucial to our lives and to ignore them takes us from a relationship with Him. It’s really not complicated, Love God completely and do unto others as you would yourself. He has told us what He allows and what He doesn’t allow. Live by ALL His commandments, most of all, love Him, accept Him and praise Him.
Happy Tuesday !!
Chapter 30..
ReplyDeleteOh Deb, your insights into this chapter are awesome. I must say 'too stupid to be human and lack of common sense' are on my plate. My hands are showing, both of them right up there in the air. But isn't it wonderful how Agur doesn't sit around being sorry for himself, instead he jumps right into praising God. So...maybe he wasn't so stupid after all. ;)
As I read verses 11 - 14 I couldn’t help but think of our country. For me these verses seem to address this generation of Americans. Verse 11, children do not respect their parents… Verse 12,in our country immorality is acceptable… Verse 13, today’s generation are very prideful and Verse 14,there is so much hatred being spewed from our mouth. What a burden I have for our country and my fellow Americans. As Christians we must be like Abraham when he interceded for Sodom. (Genesis 18:22-33) ….And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.”
{{hugs}}
Mary, I agree that this wonderful country is falling to pieces because of wickedness. I cling to the revelation given the prophets that America will not totally be destroyed and that the righteous will save her. One thing I've learned by being online is that there are tons and tons of righteous people still around. More than I thought. You and Deb are 2 that keep me cheerful in the midst of all this wickedness. Thank you!
DeleteChapter 31 - This is my most favorite Proverb. Starting with verse 10-31.
ReplyDeleteIt starts here: 10,Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. And continues saying all the wonderful things a woman can do to bring joy to herself and her household. These are the tasks most of us perform daily with little notice from others, yet these verses show that we are more valuable than rubies. Womanhood and motherhood are the very things that Satan attacks the hardest. He knows that if he can destroy a woman, he destroys a home.
I have these scriptures marked and had previously added a cross reference to D&C 138:56 which says -
56 Even before they were born, they, with many others, received their first lessons in the world of spirits and were prepared to come forth in the due time of the Lord to labor in his vineyard for the salvation of the souls of men.
(NOTE: D&C is a set of scriptures that chronicles the Restoration of the Gospel and revelations received mainly by the prophet Joseph Smith concerning our time.)
DEB and MARY, I'm sad to see this end. Although I've not been able to comment on all the Proverbs, it's been a strengthening study for me. I've gained a deeper understanding from them and from both of you. Thank you for your faith.
Chapter 31..
ReplyDeleteI love this chapter, so many women (and men) think being ‘just a wife and mother’ is so menial. Read this chapter and you will know that the good wife has a very important role in the lives of her family. What is a good/virtuous wife, she is one that fears the Lord. The key to becoming a virtuous wife and a creative partner (and Mother) is to have a vital relationship with God.
Matthew Henry’s commentary gave another insight into this chapter.
Although this chapter is to be applied to individuals it may also be applied to the Church. The same qualities that the virtuous wife has, the church should have also. God by his grace
formed from among sinful men a church of true believers, to possess all the excellence here described.
We’re done!!!!!
Deb, thank you so much for hosting this study, I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute. I love your ability to take your thoughts and opinions and put them into words. I have been truly blessed with each comments on each chapter.
Becky Jane, I am so glad we met through Jeremiah 29:11. You have shared some great points, points I will remember, points I will use in future studies. I know I’ll remember them because they are in my journal! Lolololo
Hugs and Blessings to both of you.
I hope we can do another study another day.
