Martin Luther King, Jr.

For several years, I worked for a government agency and we were privileged to get a day off work in January in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.  I have heard several jokes made about this holiday....and it hurt my heart so badly.  I even heard some people I went to church with say something that I should have had the guts to stand up to and take a stand against....but I'm sad to say, I kept my mouth shut.
I think the older I get....and especially in light of our kids adopting from Uganda....
I'm experiencing first hand just how prejudiced....
....and ignorant....
....people can be.

In honor....and in memory of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.....
I want to share some of his quotes with y'all!!!

This one totally spoke to me....ouch...
:'(

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.

A lie cannot live.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor;
it must be demanded by the oppressed.

History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.

This one I dedicate to my GRANDchildren.....

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

In HIS Most Precious Love....and with mine!!!

The photo reminds me of something I heard a pastor say in church -"faith and fear both require you to believe in something you cannot yet see". I thought that was SO powerful!!! Thank you for the daily encouragement and truth that's comes from this blog, presented honestly and without shame!!

  7. I've been in your position and understand how hard it is to stand up to friends. Our daughter's initials are MLK and it always reminds me of Dr. King. Good quotes. Loved the last one.

  8. I get goosebumps when I hear Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech. So profound. So true for everyone.

I think of my Dad on this day. When he went south during WWII, he was astonished at how the "colored" were treated. He couldn't believe it. To this day (he's 90 y/o) he still talks about how they couldn't go in the same door at a restaurant or drink out of the same fountain. My dad said he and his buddies decided if that door and that side of the room was good enough for the "colored", it was good enough for them. So they always sat with the black folks. That was a big thing to do in 1943. I'm so proud of him.

Little did he know that years later he would have 2 grandaughters marry black men and have 6 half-black grandchildren. He loves every one. And so do I.
