Brothers.....

“Are you upset little friend?
Have you been lying awake worrying?
Well, don't worry...I'm here.
The flood waters will recede, the famine will end, the sun will shine tomorrow,
and I will always be here to take care of you."

Spring Forward...Fall Back

Daylight Savings Time
by Phyllis McGinley
In Spring when maple buds are red,
We turn the Clock an hour ahead;
Which means, each April that arrives,
We lose an hour Out of our lives.

Who cares?

When Autumn birds in flocks

Fly southward, back we turn the Clocks,

And so regain a lovely thing--

That missing hour We lost last Spring.

Don't forget...turn your "back" an hour before you go nighty-night.
And...it's also time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors.
I think ours is workin' just fine.
When I opened the bathroom door yesterday morning...just the steam from my shower set ours off!!!

Blessings,

Pumpkin Prayer

Beech Springs Baptist Church is having trunk-or-treat from 12 Noon until 3:00 P.M. If it rains, the festivities will be held in the Fellowship Hall, directly behind the "stone" sanctuary. We'll be handing out treat bags that include a Bible marker, a drinking cup, and candy....all with scripture. I really like what our precious church secretary chose to give to the kiddos....so I wanted to share a bit of it with you, my blog readers.

Here is "Pumpkin Prayer":

Dear Jesus,
As I carve my pumpkin, help me pray this prayer:
Open my mind so I can learn about You
(as you cut the top off of the pumpkin)
"Know that the Lord...is God. (Psalm 100:3)
Take all my sin and forgive the wrong that I do

(as you clean out the inside)

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us. (I John 1:9)
Open my eyes so Your love I will see

(as you cut the eyes shaped like hearts)

Open my eyes, that I may see Wondrous things from Your law (Psalm 119:18)
I'm sorry for times I've turned up my nose at what You've given me.

(as you cut a nose in the shape of a cross)

Create in me a clean heart, O God (Psalm 51:10)
Open my ears so Your Word I will hear

(as you cut ears shaped like the Bible)

Incline your ear, and come to Me (Isaiah 55:3)
Open my mouth to tell others You're near

(as you cut the mouth in the shape of a fish)

(Jesus said) "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:16)
Let Your Light shine in all I say and do!
Amen.
Ask God to fill you up so He can shine brightly through you. Share your faith with your friends and neighbors as you tell them about your special pumpkin!!!
Isn't that soooo good?
If you get a chance...and you're a local....please drop by our trunk-or-treat.
There will be lots of games, prizes, candy, food...and FUN!!!

In His Most Precious Love....and with mine!!!

Friday Food Fun

How about some gross food to serve at your Halloween party tomorrow? Most of these ideas came from www.familyfun.com.

Apple slices with slivered almonds for teeth

Bread sticks with almonds for the fingernails

Carrot sticks with almond fingernails

Carrot slices, cream cheese and black olive eyeballs

Cheese sticks (love those things) and bell pepper fingernails

Mummy hot dogs using bread sticks wrapped around the hot dog and mustard for eyes

(Jess made these to take to Big Brothers Halloween party at MDO!!!)

And....you know we have to have dessert....so....what could be grosser than

KITTY LITTER CAKE

And....just in case you do decide to spring this one on your friends...here's the recipe!!!
  • 1 German chocolate cake mix plus ingredients to make the cake
  • 1 white cake mix plus ingredients to make the cake
  • 1 large box instant vanilla pudding
  • 1 package vanilla sandwich cookies
  • green food coloring
  • 1 new kitty litter box (optional)
  • 1 new kitty litter liner (optional)
  • 1 new kitty litter scoop
  • 3 to 6 Tootsie Rolls
Preparation:

  1. Prepare each cake according to package directions. Bake in whatever pans are convenient for you.
  2. Let cakes cool. Meanwhile, prepare pudding according to package directions. Refrigerate.
  3. Place sandwich cookies in a food processor fitted with a metal blade. Pulse until crushed.
  4. Remove about 1/4 cup of the cookie crumbs. Mix with a few drops of the green food coloring. Set aside.

  5. In a large bowl, crumble the cake mixes and half of the remaining sandwich cookie crumbs. Stir in just enough vanilla pudding to moisten. You may not use all of the pudding.

  6. If using a kitty litter box (make sure it is new!), line it with the new kitty litter liner. Pour the cake mixture into the kitty litter box or another large serving pan.

  7. Sprinkle the remaining sandwich cookie crumbs evenly over the cake mixture. Sprinkle the green colored sandwich cookie crumbs over top.

  8. Place unwrapped Tootsie Rolls on a microwave-safe plate. Heat on high for 10-20 seconds, just until soft enough to bend. Unwrap, and shape Tootsie rolls so that the ends are slightly curved. Scatter on the kitty litter cake.

When looking for this recipe...I found lots of pics...and I truly don't think I could take one bite of this cake....but it is a cute idea!!!

Trick-or-treat

Smell my feet

Give me something

Good to eat!!
Sorry...couldn't resist...ha! ha!
Happy Halloween, my Friends!!

Prayerful Thursday

1 Peter 3:15-16
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
Usually, on Thursday, I post just prayer requests...but I wanted to add a little somethin' to today's post.  I came across the above verse of scripture while doing some reading in my Bible this week.  I was reading out of an older Bible that I've highlighted and marked and made lots of notes in.  I've enjoyed going back thru and reading scriptures that really spoke to me at the time I read them, or heard the scripture preached from, or heard them taught in Sunday school class.  This verse really spoke to me...because it reminded me that I should always be prepared to let others know about my Jesus.  Have you ever been made fun of because of your relationship with your Savior?  I have...and it hurt.  The particular instance I'm thinking about happened many years ago....and I can still hear the remarks of the particular people who made fun of me because I was attending a Bible study class during my lunch break.

But....according to this verse....as long as I keep a clear conscience and just keep on keeping on....eventually they will feel ashamed of how they treated me.
Have you ever done something that you felt ashamed of later on?
Something you truly wish you hadn't said, or done?
Yeah...me, too....lots of times!!!
Praise the Lord for His forgiveness!!

Are you religious?

I was described at one time as being
"from the religious side of the family".
What was meant by the statement....was that this person didn't want me to know what kind of lifestyle they were living....because I went to church....tried to live right....you know....I was "religious".

You know how us religious folk can be, don't you? Occasionally we judge those who aren't living up to our standards!!! We go to church "religiously".....we think it's terrible that others don't attend church every time the church doors are open. We get involved in everything that we can so that others can see just how "religious" we are. We occasionally...when we're not too busy doing other "religious" things....read our Bible...every once in a while we might let somebody know how we've been blessed.   We can be religious about most anything....watching a favorite TV show....not wanting to miss a game played by a favorite team...we can even get really religious about the food we eat!!!

You know what I've decided???
That I don't want to be labeled as "religious".
I want to be known as a child of God!!!  I want others to see Christ in me....not how many things I'm involved in that are considered "religious"....or how much scripture I might can quote (although it's important to study our Bible)....I just want others to know....that I love my Lord...and He loves me!!
What better way to be known?

Isaiah 64:6 (NLT)
We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.

Owly Treats

Since the name of this blog is "Wise Old Owl"....
....what better recipes to post than owly ones?!?!?
I found these on the web-site Bright Ideas
For those of you with kiddos....or grand-kiddos....or, neices, or nephews...or, if you're just like me and have a HUGE sweet tooth....there are some really neat ideas on there....great for teachers, too!!

1 roll (18 oz.) refrigerated sugar cookie dough
1/4 cup flour
1/3 cup cocoa powder
20 whole cashews
¼ cup chocolate frosting
½ cup M&M’S® Brand Peanut Chocolate Candies
2 cookie sheet pans
Plastic wrap paper
Resealable plastic bag

1. Divide the sugar cookie dough in three pieces. Knead the flour into one piece of cookie dough until smooth, set aside. Combine the remaining two pieces of cookie dough and knead in the cocoa powder until smooth, set aside.

2. Roll the lighter colored cookie dough into a 1-inch round log about 10 inches long, and move it off to the side. Roll out the chocolate cookie dough on a lightly floured surface to a 10 x 4-inch rectangle. Place the light colored log of cookie dough on top of the chocolate rectangle. Wrap the chocolate cookie dough completely around the lighter colored log. Pinch edges to seal and roll the log smooth. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
3. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Cut the cookie log into 1/4-inch slices. Place 2 slices, side by side, on sheet pans. Press a cashew into cookie at the point the slices touch. Repeat with remaining cookie slices. Bake for approximately 8-11 minutes, or until cookies are just beginning to golden. Remove from the oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool.

4. Spoon the chocolate frosting into a resealable bag and snip a small corner from bag. Using the photograph as guide, pipe eyelashes and a dot to secure candies. Add the M&M’S® Brand Chocolate Candies for eyes.

I also came across this one...at recipe.com....but there was no picture.

They sound yummy!!!

Owl Eyes
1 cup graham cracker crumbs
2 cups confectioners sugar
1 cup margarine
1 cup peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
16 ounces chocolate chips
¼ bar paraffin wax

Mix together crumbs, sugar, margarine, peanut butter and vanilla. Form into small balls.
Melt together chocolate chips and wax.
Dip small balls in chocolate mixture, covering half. Keep chocolate warm as you do this.
Place on wax paper to cool.

Wouldn't these be neat to make for some special little trick-or-treaters....
....or....maybe their Nannie?!?!?

Whatta 'ya think?

Blessings,

Tip for Tuesday

Occasionally, I will come across some body's blog and they will post their ideas of
"tips for bloggers".
Often, I wonder "who do you think you are"?
Does that sound mean?
I don't "mean" for it to sound "mean"...but...here is what I'm getting at.
Your blog is YOURS.....so here are my own tips that I've come up with after blogging for a bit:
1. First of all...enjoy it!!! When I first started Jeremiah 29:11 it was to show some of my crochet work that I was selling at the time. But...as most of you know who know me...and who follow that blog...God spoke to me early one Sunday morning (I can still remember where I was walking at in the subdivision)....and asked me to write it for HIM. So...that's what I've truly tried to do.

2. Occasionally, you might have to take a bit of a break. Writing a blog isn't an easy task. If you get in a slump....just post that on your blog that you're gonna be gone for a few days!

3. Use pictures. Pictures make your posts so much more interesting. Depending on whether you write your posts thru Blogger...or if you use another source to write your posts and then use the html code from that source and copy and past it into blogger....will determine the size of pics you can post. Well...that, and what "layout" you use...but, as you blog for awhile....you'll learn these things!
4. Take advantage of all the "free" backgrounds and headers and info you can find on the Internet. For a long time, I used seasonal backgrounds....and I have to admit that I miss using them. But, I had to decide if I wanted my blog to look "clean".....and be able to post bigger pics...or use the backgrounds. So...I chose changing out my headers to be more seasonal. It's your own personal preference. But, I love having the bigger pics on my blog (especially in my old age!!!)
5. Music!! A lot of the "professional" bloggers will discourage you using music on your blog. Well....my personal opinion on that one is....if you visit my blog...and you don't like my choice of music (on either blog)....my Playlist is at the very top. It only takes a sec to turn it off!!
6. Make your blog your own....don't copy others!!! Of course, if you look at others' blogs...you're gonna get ideas...but, please, please, please...come up with your own ideas for your posts. And...if you use a pic, or a recipe, or a quote, or whatever...that isn't original to you....give credit where credit is due. It's very simple to link to another person's blog...or to a web-site.
It's just common blogging courtesy!!!

Blessings,

Laughter really is.....

.....the best medicine!!!

Did y'all know I'm a Grandmother?

No...really, you didn't know that?

Can't believe I've never mentioned that before now!!!

Well....I am....but, actually I'm Nannie. Started out being Nana....but that changed when Big Brother was about 2....and he started calling me Nannie...so now....Nannie I am!!!

The boys stayed with us a while yesterday afternoon/evening.....and they crack me up. They are hilarious. Both of them are adorable...but with Big Brother being the age he is....three going on thirteen....he's at that stage where he asks a million questions. But...how else is he going to learn, right...if he doesn't ask questions?

If he doesn't understand what I say at first...he'll ask, "What you say, Nannie"? I don't know why....but that just tickles me to death....I'm actually trying to keep from busting out laughing (because Pappy is asleep) as I type this!! I was putting his shoes on him, fixing to take him back to his Daddy and Momma...and I told him that I would give him and Little Bit a Tootsie Roll to eat on the way back to his house....he didn't understand what a Tootsie Roll was....which was when he asked, "What you say, Nannie"?....at which time I got very tickled....and then he did, too, and told me to quit laughing....and then was trying to tell Pappy that he was going to get chocolate candy....laughing his little head off at the same time.

Okay...you probably had to be there....but....may I say....just in case anybody is wondering....

I LOVE OUR BOYS!!!

(and I often wonder why God loves me so much.....

.....to bless me like He has!!!)

Blessings,

Praying with your partner

Do you pray?
Silly question, right?
Of course you pray.
But....how comfortable are you with praying out loud...letting others hear you talk to God?
I have a confession to make.
Pappy and I haven't always prayed together.
I think the first time...that we actually held hands and prayed out loud....was around 3.5 years ago when God was prompting me to quit my job. Pappy had wanted me to quit for quite some time....and not being the submissive wife that I should have been....and listening to his reasoning....I kept on turning a deaf ear to both my husband....and to my Savior. When I finally did listen....we sat on our back porch (sun room)....and held hands and prayed. What a release....and a relief....to finally have listened to my husband's wishes...and my Lord's!
Praying with your spouse is a wonderful way to get closer to each other.

But....it's also something that one, or the other, might not be too comfortable in doing.

So....here's what I've decided....one of you might have to be the one to take the initiative if this is going to become a part of your marriage!!

This is something that I feel...at least in my own marriage...is very important. For years...I've wanted us to be praying partners....and for years that didn't happen. No amount of begging, or pleading, or wanting it to happen....made a difference.

So....and I know this came from God....HE let me know....that even if it meant being the one to take my husband's hand....and lead us in prayer...then...that's the way it has to be!!!

Have you prayed with your hubby lately?

Try it...it's habit forming!!!

Ephesians 5:21 - Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Midlife Crisis

So....here's the deal.
I get this daily e-mail that talks about women's health....and if the main topic is something that seems interesting...I might take a gander at the e-mail...otherwise, it's one of those things that goes into my "delete" file!!
One thing that caught my eye a couple of weeks ago was
"could your weight be affecting your knees"?
How could they have even known that I was having such a problem with my knee???
Could my weight be the problem?
Could all this excessive baggage be taking a toll on my poor pitiful knee?

Then...over the weekend I get one that talks about having a "midlife crisis"?
Here are some of the things that they say can trigger women having a midlife crisis:

Children leaving home
(yep....when Jess got married 8 years ago....it took me a good 18 months to get over it!!)
Death of a loved one
(lost my Dad 15 years ago, dad-in-law 14 years ago...mom-in-law a year ago)
Care giving for older relatives
(haven't gotten there yet...but I see how it's affecting my Mom taking care of my Mamaw)

Loss of a job or approaching retirement
(well....if you know me well, you already know my status on this one)

Signs of declining physical health
(this leads me back to the knee)
You know what?
These e-mails are probably supposed to be helpful....helpful information wise, I mean....instead they only helped in adding to my blue mood
(I don't think I've gotten an e-mail about "depression" yet).
So...here's one thing I've decided that will help my midlife crisis....
....UNSUBSCRIBE TO THAT E-MAIL ABOUT WOMEN'S HEALTH!!!

Whatta 'ya think?

Blessings,

Refine...me!

I know you all have read this one before, probably in an e-mail you've received from a friend....but, it's very much worth a repeat!!!
Malachi 3:3 (NLT)
He will sit like a refiner of silver, burning away the dross. He will purify the Levites, refining them like gold and silver, so that they may once again offer acceptable sacrifices to the Lord.
Refining Silver
There was a group of women in a Bible study of the book of Malachi. As they were studying chapter three, they came across verse three (3) which says: "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver."This verse puzzled the women and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God. One of the women offered to find out about the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible study. That week this woman called up a silver smith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest in silver beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver. As she watched the silver smith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities. The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot - then she thought again about the verse, that he sits as a refiner and purifier of silver. She asked the silver smith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left even a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed. The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silver smith, "How do you know when the silver is fully refined?"He smiled at her and answered, "Oh, that's easy - It's finished when I can see my image in it.
We can rest easy knowing God never takes His eyes off us when we are in the fire!!
AMEN...and AMEN!!

Mercy Me!!!

Pappy and I don't get out much....really, we don't!!!
Unless you can count Wally World and Biggie Lotties!!!
Oh, and Micky D's drive-thru breakfast dates!!
But...we don't go to "events" very often!!!
I was in bed...trying to read...but had the TV on and was watching that channel that shows all the upcoming things that are happening in and around our area...you know, important stuff like craft fairs and bake sales!!!!
Hey, I'm actually being serious here!!!
I NEVER watch this channel...but it just caught my eye, so I kept on watching as each event scrolled across the screen....in upcoming date order.
And...low and behold....
.....LOOK WHAT SHOWED UP!!!

I didn't get all the detals....so....I had to lay there and watch as they went back thru about 50 advertisements until they rolled back around to November 20th.
So...GUESS WHAT????
GUESS WHERE WE'RE GOING (PAPPY AND ME)????
Can you tell I'm a bit EXCITED?!?!?!?
YIPPEE!!!

I'm goin' on a date!!!!

Dust if you must.....

Ladies!!!

Remember... a layer of dust protects the wood beneath it.

'A house becomes a home' when you can write 'I love you' on the furniture.'

I used to spend at least 8 hours every weekend making sure things were just perfect - 'in case someone came over'.

Finally I realized one day that no-one came over;

they were all out living life and having fun!

NOW, when people visit, I don't have to explain the 'condition' of my home

They are more interested in hearing about the things I've been doing...how I was living life and having fun.

If you haven't figured this out yet,

....please heed this advice.

Life is short. Enjoy it!

Dust if you must .......

.....but wouldn't it be better

.....to paint a picture or write a letter,

.....bake cookies or a cake and lick the spoon

.....or, plant a seed,

....ponder the difference between want and need?

Dust if you must, but there's not much time ....

.....rivers to swim and mountains to climb,

......music to hear and books to read,

.....friends to cherish and life to lead....

Dust if you must, but the world's out there

with the sun in your eyes,

the wind in your hair, a flutter of snow, a shower of rain.

This day will not come around, again.

Dust if you must , but bear in mind,

old age will come and it's not kind.

And when you go - and go you must

- you, yourself will make more dust!

It's not what you gather, but what you scatter

that tells what kind of life you have lived.

Blessings,

Prayerful Thursday

Thank you all so much for all your prayers for our family. Both boys have had pink eye...ear infections...throat infections....fevers....and very runny noses!!! Jess has had a terrible sinus infection...still coughing. I'm better...just have some allergy problems. Pappy...he's the one who's still feeling terrible. His fever went up Tuesday night, and he's on new meds...so hopefully, this will get rid of his sinus/throat problems, too! WOW!!!
Who would have thought all of us would have been sick at the same time?!?!?
But...on a more pleasant note...guess what I got to do last night?
I GOT TO GO TO CHURCH!!!!
YIPPEE!!!
I missed church sooooo bad. We went Sunday a week ago....then had a wedding that evening and didn't get to go....was sick last Wednesday night and this past Sunday....so I was determined to go to Wednesday evening service!!!
And, I'm soooo glad I did.
It was so good to see everybody....but I did miss giving out hugs....refrained from doing that...just in case!!!
And...Mr. Bill is so interesting!!!
Here are our prayer requests for this week:
1. Family of Teresa Koontz

3. Mr. Richard Lilly

4. Mr. Jason Cole
Mr. Cole works with Pappy. He had surgery on his shoulder yesterday. He's been out of work for several weeks due this injury. Please keep him and his family in your prayers for his healing and that he can return to work as soon as he's able.
5. Pastor Search Committee - Beech Springs Baptist Church
Please keep our church in your prayers as our committee searches for the man God has in store to fill our pulpit.
If anybody has any other requests that I'm unaware of, please let me know, and we'll get them added.
