Women of the Bible - Shiphrah and Puah

How many of you saw who we're talking about this week and thought to yourself
"who in the world are they"?
I've read about these ladies, but didn't recall their names until I started pondering on who to focus on this week.  I enjoyed researching these interesting women!!!

Exodus 1:15-22
Then Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, gave this order to the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah:
"When you help the Hebrew women as they give birth, watch as they deliver.  If the baby is a boy, kill him; if it is a girl, let her live."
But because the midwives feared God, they refused to obey the king's orders.  They allowed the boys to live, too.  So the king of Egypt called for the midwives.  "Why have you done this?" he demanded.  "Why have you allowed the boys to live?"  "The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women,"  the midwives replied.  "They are more vigorous and have their babies so quickly that we cannot get there in time."  So God was good to the midwives, and the Israelites continued to multiply, growing more and more powerful.  And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.  Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people:
"Throw every newborn Hebrew boy into the Nile River.  But you may let the girls live."

Pharaoh was getting very concerned because the Hebrews were becoming more and more numerous, starting to outnumber the Egyptians.  Even while under the hard circumstances of slavery to the Egyptians, the Hebrews continued to multiply, even more than they had before.  So....Pharaoh's solution was to kill all the Hebrew baby boys.  These wonderful women who were midwives....and who could have been killed for refusing Pharaoh's orders....chose to believe that their GOD would save and protect them!!!

Conclusions:

*Righteous women of God choose to conceive, deliver and protect life....above all else.

*When we put God above man and do what is right He blesses us!!!!  And....in trusting in the Lord....we shouldn't  worry about what others do/say/think about us!!!

In His Most Precious Love....and with mine!!!

  1. It is interesting, though, that the midwives lied to the king. They let the boys live but they told the king they couldn't get there in time. Sometimes the choice isn't between right and wrong, but between wrong and evil.
