What's in a name.....

Most of the time I refer to my hubby as Pappy,
because that's what our grand-kiddos call him.
But, many of you know his given name is Jack.
I've often thought about how aptly named he is because this man can do ANYTHING!!!  It's unreal the money he's saved us over the years by doing repairs himself.  We built our house back before there weren't so many codes and regulations and he even did the wiring himself.  He fixes plumbing issues and works on our car and truck.  So, yes his name sure does fit his personality.

But, isn't that what we find when we read the Bible?
So many times children were given names that they "lived up to",
even if the name had a not so pleasant meaning.

Our firstborn grandson was given the name Samuel,
because it was difficult for his Momma and Daddy to conceive due to some medical issues.  His name is based on I Samuel 1:27.....

For this child I prayed;
and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of Him.

My own name is based on the Biblical name Deborah.....
my Momma just chose to spell mine differently, which I like.
('cause I like being "different"....;-)
The meaning of Deborah is "bee",
and we all know how busy bees are.
I do feel I live up to that name,
at least most of the time.
It's difficult for me to be idle too long.
Even if I'm sitting still,
I have to be reading something, or crocheting.....
something to keep this old(er) mind occupied!

So....
what about you?
Do you know the meaning of your name?
Do you feel like you "live up to" the name you were given?
Does it fit your personality?
Did you name your kiddos Biblical names?
(our daughter's name is Jessica, which means "rich - God beholds")

An inquiring mind is curious this Monday morning!!!

Breathing in Grace,

  3. Had to stop visiting and go find out what MARY means....Oh Dear....I am bitter and rebellious, but I'm also a 'wished for child.' I don't know if my parents were wishing for another child or not, but if they were...I bet they wished differently when I reached those bitter, rebellious teen years! lol I enjoyed your post so much, wonderful names for a wonderful family! Hope your week is going well. ((hugs))

  5. Renee means born anew or reborn, so I've always liked my name and what it means. Several of our children have Biblical names and my hubby is named Joel, which means proclaimer of God....as a pastor that certainly fits!
