{ Wednesday's Word - Watch ]

watch

to take care of; to keep under guard; to be on the alert for; to look at; to observe closely in order to check on action or change

All along on the road to the soul's true abode,
there’s an eye watching you;
Every step that you take this great eye is awake,
there’s an eye watching you.
Refrain:
Watching you, watching you,
Ev’ry day mind the course you pursue,
Watching you, watching you,
There’s an all-seeing Eye watching you.

 As you make life’s great fight, keep the pathway of right,
There’s an eye watching you;
God will warn not to go in the path of the foe,
There’s an eye watching you.

  Fix your mind on the goal, that sweet home of the soul,
There’s an eye watching you;
Never turn from the way to the kingdom of day,
There’s an eye watching you.

When I was a little girl we used to sing this song in church, "There's An Eye Watching You".  I'm not gonna lie the song kinda scared the heebie-jeebies outta me as a kid because it made me see God as a mean old man watching my every move and just waiting to strike me down as soon as I made one wrong move or said something that I shouldn't. That was pretty much my way of thinking for many years and how I pictured God because I viewed God and serving Him in a very legalistic way. I was terrified that I would "break the law", so to speak.  It took a lot of Bible study and good teaching and reading to see God as the loving God that He is!  Yes, He sees my every move and knows each thought that pops into my mind and way too often out of my mouth.  Yes, He reprimands me out of love. Yes, He does have an all-seeing eye watching over me. But, just like the definition of "watch" I shared above, He's taking care of me!

Oh, what a different picture I have of our sweet Lord and Savior now than I did as a child!

Thank goodness!!!

  1. Oh, thank you for this wonderful post...and that Psalm to comfort and encourage us. I totally understand where you are coming from...and so happy for where you are today...We have such a big, powerful, loving God...and thankfully He IS watching us every day, but yes! With eyes of love and compassion and protection...He loves us and doesn't want any harm to come to us. This is the God I know and love. Thank you. Comforting to know as we get on a plane early tomorrow morning to fly up to Maine for our grandson's graduation.

Kind words are like honey—
sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.
