{ Friday Foto Friends #168 }

Yesterday was one of the best days I've had in a very long time. Our grand-kiddos are homeschooled by our daughter and she decided to take a day yesterday because of the gorgeous weather and take the kiddos hiking at Ijams Nature Center and she asked me to tag along.  She didn't have to ask twice.  We hiked to what's called "The Keyhole" at Mead's Quarry and with all the issues I've had with my knee, I didn't have any trouble at all.
God is so good!

 Here are some fotos I took along the way.

The old kilns where the rocks were heated and made into limestone. Trucks would back up to the openings to be loaded and hauled away.

Our kids on the rocks. The oldest one at the top actually climbed higher and scared the heebie-jeebies outta Nannie going up so high, especially since the rocks were so slick.

Our girl and the grand-kiddos standing in the "keyhole".

The quarry.

On the way home, we spotted the sunsphere. For my friends who are unfamiliar with the sunsphere, it's a landmark in Knoxville that was a part of the 1982 World's Fair. It's beautiful. I told Jess I hadn't been inside it in many years and she took the next exit off the Interstate and took me!

These fotos were taken from the observation deck.
I took this one because I used to work in the TVA tower on the right.

Knoxville's very own"rainbow row"!

I ended the day staying with the kiddos while their Daddy and Momma went and got their taxes done.
Needless to say, Nannie was a tad worn out by bedtime.....
but, happy!

HOPE everybody has a great weekend!

  1. Oh, Debbie, what wonderful fotos!! You certainly had a beautiful day with your kiddos, even though I am sure it was tiring...you have such great memories...and they do too!! Love all these interesting places around your area. I remember when the World's Fair was in Knoxville, but I didn't get to go. I just remember driving through there and seeing all the changes along the highway because of the fair. Thank you for sharing this with us. Looks like a place that would still be very fascinating to explore.

  2. Reminds me of my youthful days hiking in the mountains. That last shot from the World's Fair kind of made me sad. I had planned to come back to Tennessee for the fair; I would visit my girl friend's mom who lived down the street from my childhood home. She and I planned to go together. Unfortunately work prevented me from making it to the fair and my sweet older friend died of cancer within that year. Listen to me reminisce - hope your weekend is fabulous!

  3. Where to start with the comments...#1 The Grands are growing so much. They are all going to be tall. I am glad you got to have such a wonderful day and make so many new memories. Life is great at our age, isn't it. #2 Oh my! What beautiful weather we had yesterday. It made the 40 degree weather this morning a little hard to handle. But I'll take any time we can get with spring temps. I need to go up in the sunsphere. I have never been there. Love the view. Didn't even realize we had little painted houses in Knoxville. Going to the sunsphere is going on my bucket list!

  4. What a fun day you all had! The quarry and those rocks are so interesting! I would have been a little anxious standing under those rocks in that 'keyhole'. Wow! That wall of rocks makes a great climbing wall, but not without the proper equipment!! Thanks for sharing the photos of your fun day!
