Security Blanket

How many of you had a favorite blanket....or a favorite stuffed animal when you were a kid??? I don't think I did...at least I don't remember it. One of my baby shower gifts was a white thermal blanket with satin binding around the edges. Jess loved that blanket. She would rub the satin edge as she went to sleep, until she rubbed most of it off....and, as it would fray, I would cut it off. Would you believe....almost 30 years later....she still has a small portion of that blanket left? I'm gonna do something special for her one of these days using that little scrap of dingy thermal!!!

But...what do you consider your "security blanket"?

What...or who....do you turn to when you're feeling the need to feel safe and secure?

That answer would probably be different for each of us.....drugs....cigarettes....alcohol....food....sex....
TV shows....movies....exercise....job....spouse....
pastor....teacher....friend....
and on and on and on!!!

I've learned over the years.....that people are going to disappoint and let us down....even those in leadership who we sometimes hold up to much higher expectations.....you know, those we hold up to the light and try to see every little thing there is to know about them.....but, even those people are human....and as much as we would like to think otherwise....being human....they are subject to fail, too....just like the rest of us!!!!

So, don't put your total security in any one human being!!!

Haven't all of us learned over the past year, or so, that with the economy the way it is....we should never think that we should use money as our security blanket? Haven't a lot of us lost money in 401K accounts....IRA's....stocks and bonds? Did you think that your job was secure and you found out that there was going to be a layoff where you work, or your hours cut back?

Here's the definition of security, according to Merriam-Webster on-line dictionary:
"The quality or state of being secure.....freedom from danger.....safety.....freedom from fear or anxiety"

And...one definition of secure:

"Unwisely free from fear or distrust"

Don't you just love that definition....."unwisely free from fear or distrust". What one word stands out in that statement....in that definition??? "Unwisely". Doesn't that tell you that it's unwise to feel totally secure in any one thing....in any one person????

Total security....there's only one thing in our lives that should make us feel totally secure....totally free from fear, or distrust....there's only ONE we can put our complete trust in...and that's Jesus!!!!

Security = Trust

Don't you agree....the only way we are going to ever feel secure....is if all our trust can be put into SOMEONE???

Psalm 28:7 (NLT)
The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.

Do you trust HIM....with all your heart????

Proverbs 11:28 (NIV)
Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.
Scripture plainly tells us....do not set our hearts upon riches....upon wealth....upon money!!!
Psalm 118:9 (NLT
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.

We cannot trust in those in leadership (princes) for our security....or....another way to look at this....don't trust that "knight in shining armour"....or, the proverbial "one day my prince will come".....true confidence....true trust...can only be in our Savior!!!

Jeremiah 17:5 (NIV)
This is what the LORD says: "Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD.

Both the KJV and the NIV use the word "cursed".....that seems a very strong word to me...but it gets the point across, don't you think??? We are "cursed" if we trust in man who depends on himself...or another...for his strength. Our strength....our security....our HOPE...is only in Christ!!!

Proverbs 3:5 (NIV)
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.

This one is my favorite.....althought I often fail in trusting Him "with all my heart"....I do trust God. I trust Him to be the same every single day....every single hour....every single minute. He never changes....He's dependable and reliable....He's always there....even when I try to figure things out on my own....and I make a big mess because I'm "leaning on my own understanding", instead of His...He's there to fix things for me....and put me back on my feet and back on the right track!!! He never leaves me...never lets me down...is always right there!!!

I totally trust Him to never, ever leave me!!!

In other words....

JESUS IS MY SECURITY BLANKET!!!!

In His Most Precious Love....and with mine!!!

  1. Deb EXCELLENT posting this morning. I grew up without much security and I did not have a security blanket or anything. But as I grew older I created within me a place I could go to run from all the cruelty of the world I lived in and that became my "security blanket"...as you I now have a Holy Righteous Security Blanket ~ Jesus Christ the Son of the Living God ~ LORD Jesus Christ~
None can comfort me from fears, none can bring peace to me in the midst of much turmoil as HE does ~
Even as I post this morning I draw strength and comfort from my Lord to get me through this day. Today, my oldest son would have had his 35th birthday.
