It's been nice to have a recap of a lot of what we've already read since we've stayed in the book of II Chronicles this week.
That means I don't have a lot of notes to share with you....but here are some of the things that stood out to me during this week's reading!!!
***King Solomon prayed a prayer of dedication of the Temple before all the people. In II Chronicles 6:21, he prayed to the Lord, "may You hear the humble and earnest requests of your people. Yes, hear us from heaven where You live and when you hear, forgive."
(sounds like a prayer that we should pray ourselves, huh?)
After Solomon's prayer, fire flashed down from heaven and burned up the offerings and sacrifices. The glorious presence of the Lord filled the Temple.
***This is one of the most quoted verses of scripture simply because of the status of our country today.
II Chronicles 7:14
Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.
***It took King Solomon 20 years to build the Lord's Temple and his palace.
***The Queen of Sheba visited King Solomon to find out if all she had heard about him was true. She discovered his wisdom was even greater than she had been told.
***Each year, King Solomon received about 25 Tons of gold. He had a fleet of trading ships and once every 3 years they returned loaded with gold, silver, ivory, apes and peacocks.
***King Rehoboam asked some older men who had counseled his father, Solomon, for advice. He rejected their advice and instead took the advice of some young men he had grown up with which turned out to be a mistake!!
(most of time....wisdom comes with age!!)
***When Asa was king he removed his grandmother, Maacah, from her throne because she had made an obscene Asherah pole. Ahserah was the wife of the god El and the mother of 70 children, including Baal. He cut down the pole, broke it up, and burned it. Asa got a serious foot disease and as severe as it was, he didn't ask the Lord for help, but turned to his physicians.
***King Asa put his trust to keep Judah safe in another king instead of THE KING!!! He took silver and gold from the Temple as a bribe for protection. When Asa was corrected for his wrongdoing by Hanani, the seer, he threw him into prison and put him in stocks
(sometimes we need to take "criticism".....as "constructive"!!!)
***(loved this verse!!!)
II Chronicles 16:9
The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.
***(and this one)
II Chronicles 19:6
Always think carefully before pronouncing judgment. Remember that you do not judge to please people but to please the Lord. He will be with you when you render the verdict in each case.
***(and this one, too)
II Chronicles 20:15b
This is what the Lord says:
Do not be afraid!
Don't be discouraged by this mighty army for the battle is not yours, but God's.
AMEN....and AMEN!
***When King Uzziah became powerful he also became proud which led to his downfall. He was so proud that he entered the Temple of the Lord to burn incense himself, a duty for only the Levite priests. As Azariah, the high priest and 80 other priests went into the Temple to confront King Uzziah, he became angry and was suddenly stricken with leprosy and lived in isolation in a separate house and was excluded form entering the Temple.
***King Uzziah's son, Jothan, was the next king....and in contrast to his father, he became powerful because he was careful to place his obedience in the Lord his God!!!
So....that's that about that, as my Mammie used to say!!!

ReplyDeleteWe have been studying I and II Kings with my son as part of his daily lessons. It is certainly amazing how the desire for power can destroy a man...and a kingdom.
Oh,that we may we remain obedient to Him and avoid the pitfalls of greed.
